Royal College of Arts – Battersea
Design Criteria
PSB UK Ltd has been requested on behalf of Norstead and Max Fordham Architects to design & install mechanical smoke ventilations systems to the lobbies for the Royal College of Arts at the north site phase 2.
The mechanical smoke extract systems have been designed to exceed the statutory requirements detailed within the Approved document B and as such is an engineered solution.
The design of these systems is based upon principals detailed within BS EN 12101-6.
Staircore 2
Staircore 2 lobby is ventilated at ground (0.23), level one (1.13), level two (2.25) and level three (3.17).
The damper and grilles are mounted into a builder’s shaft and are across the shorter of the two sides at ground, one, and two and across the longer side at level three.
The builders shaft is to be substantially straight, vertical and directly adjacent to the lobbies being vented. The construction is to have a smooth internal face and minimum air leakage. The internal cross sectional area is to be equal to or greater than 0.6m² with an aspect ratio no more than 2:1. A “finished” builders opening of 600mm (w) by 1200mm (h) at each level is required, the upper edge should be no more than approximately 100mm below finished ceiling height.
A 1.0m2 insulated Automatic Opening Vent (AOV) will be installed over the stairwell this will have a throat dimension of 1100mm by 1000mm and require a builders upstand with a typical external dimension of 1300mm by 1200mm. (to be confirmed)
The fan set will be mounted on a purpose built upstand above at level 3 roof, (see system description for size preference) and is designed to discharge vertically. A back-draught damper will prevent draughts and the ingress of rain water
